One of my favorite quotes is Neil Gaiman’s new year’s wish from so many years ago. It says:
“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you are wonderful, and don’t forget to make some good art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.”
I read this every NYE and try to live by it every year. I realized I’ve never made a new year’s wish before, so now let me share with you my own wish for everybody…
May you find and give love, love in all its simple and complicated forms. Love that makes you
sing perform in the shower. Love that doesn’t make you cranky in the morning. Love that inspires you to create beauty in this world. Love that makes every weird thing about a person seem cute. Love that makes you believe in the universe and all its divine power. Love that gives you patience even when facing the most difficult people.
May you find it in everything you see, be it your crazy family, crazy friends, crazy strangers, crazy karaoke-loving neighbors, crazy pets that wreck your house, or even in nature. May you find it and throw it back to the first person you see or bump into.
May you find this love that causes deep respect, honesty, curiosity, strength and happiness this coming new year, and beyond.
Happy new year, everybody.
